Easter/Pasqua in Italy...

Holy Week Procession

If you were to visit Italy during Easter (Pasqua in Italian), you most likely will not see the Easter bunny. You will, however, see and experience some fascinating and sometimes extremely emotional Italian celebrations. Processions, sometimes lasting for hours can include participants carrying the cross, Madonna, and actors standing in for Christ bloodied and bruised. What’s believed to be the oldest Good Friday procession in Italy is in Chieti in the Abruzzo region. The procession with Selecchi’s Miserere played by 100 violins is very moving.

The week leading up to Easter includes solemn processions, masses, and dinners with friends and loved ones to reflect on Christ’s Crucifixion. Easter Day, however, is a joyous celebration, and the Monday after Easter (la Pasquetta)is a holiday throughout Italy.
